Scheduled Task using shutdown -f -s problem

F

Fishermun

Friend used Scheduled Tasks to shutdown his xp laptop when idle using
shutdown -f -s. The -f switch causes applications to stop before the actual
shutdown. Everything works fine, except he set the "Idle Time" at 2 minutes
for testing. From the time he turns his laptop on to the point that the
Scheduled Task runs is just over 2 minutes, so his laptop schedules the
shutdown at or about the time that the computer is fully booted up. We have
a cycle created here. Anyway to delete the scheduled task, before it is
scheduled to run, but after the system is fully booted up. Where are the
scheduled tasks located? Do the scheduled tasks run from Safe Mode? Big

You asked specifically - but have not tried?
Try Safe Mode.

Also - any way to type "shutdown -a" in a RUN prompt before it restarts?

The location is here:
%systemroot%\Tasks

Scheduled tasks shouldn't run in Safe mode. The Task Scheduler service
doesn't start in Safe Mode. Keep in mind that if you can open a command
prompt window (Start -> Run -> cmd.exe), the shutdown -a command will stop
the process.

Scheduled tasks can be accessed through Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks.
They're usually stored in the C\WINDOWS\Tasks folder.

Good luck

Nepatsfan,

You don't have to open a command prompt.

Windows Key + R ( or Start button --> RUN) followed by typing in:
shutdown -a
and clicking OK (or ENTER) will do the same thing.

Yes, I did ask specifically - but have not tried, as you state below.
Friends laptop is just a bit over 280 miles away. Maybe we should have a
"How To Answer Questions The Smart Way". Thread dropped.

Thanks Nepatsfan, I will call her this morning, and walk her through booting
into safe mode, and see if she can increase the scheduled time to a longer
period. She forgets to turn it off from time to time. She is 81 and going
strong.

I'd think not - because if you knew a possible solution, listed it as a
possible solution, but didn't try the possible solution - then you should
not be defensive when someone points out that you specified what you could
try but hadn't tried. ;-)

[discussion on] "How To Answer Questions The Smart Way".

WHERE in your original post did you mention that you do not have
immediate access to the problematic host?

"My car has a flat tire. The spare tire is good and in the trunk of my
car. Should I replace the flat tire with the spare tire?"

If this were asked to an audience, they'd probably look at each other
and mumble, "You think this is real question?" Nothing was said that
the car is back in your home state thousand of miles away while you are
vacationing elsewhere and your neighbor phoned you about the flat. You
expected anyone to know why you didn't try to replace the flat before
asking about doing it?
Thread dropped.

Okay, your wish will be honored. Thread is now dropped by me.
