I currently have a copy windows vista home basic which i used on my previous
laptop which was soon taken to the insurance company because someone thought
it would be funny to throw it. now that i have a new laptop windows vista
home basic complains to me that the activation code is in use. i cant afford
to buy another key. is there any way that the code can be deactiveated from
that computer remotely? without having to actulay use the other computer as
it wont start and the hard drive took quite an amount of damage rendering it
useless even when removed and used as a sata external drive.

any help?

If it was an OEM copy, you're out of luck.
Didn't the new laptop come with Windows?
If it was a retail copy of Vista, just click through to phone activation and
explain the old machine was damaged and is no longer in use.

There is no deactivation for Vista.

If you have a key for a transferable (retail) license, use the phone
activation method. You'll have to continue through the process until you get
to a live MS rep. Explain the situation, and he will give you an activation
code.

You may not be able to do that if your license is an OEM version.

How did you acquire a new laptop without Vista pre-installed? (Or is it an
old one, that came with XP?)

Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.
