Activation on new hard drive

Daniel

Hi

I have Ultimate 32.

I have just installed a new C: hard drive and copied a clone of my original
C: drive using Casper 5 (brilliant program)

Last time I did this my activation was deactivated after a couple of days
and I lost a lot of functions in Vista, it did not matter then because I
formatted and reinstalled Vista, this time I do not want to do that but I
would prefer to activate Vista on the new hard drive before it becomes an
issue.

How do I contact the activation centre (Australia) when I click on "activate
Windows" in computer properties it says it is activated and does not give me
any options.

So how do I get it activated before I lose the functionality?

thanks

Daniel

When I had to activate Windows XP, the activation screen gave me a phone
option, and when I told it where I was (USA) it gave me a number to call.

Apparently you don't have that option, thanks to what looks like a bug. I
wonder if the Microsoft web site will have that phone number somewhere...

I did a quick look on Microsoft.com, and what they say is
"The telephone number varies by location and is provided during the
activation process". That's not good for you.

Here's the site where I looked at some FAQs:
http://www.microsoft.com/australia/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/activationfaq.mspx

Or: http://tinyurl.com/aq5kgv

I guess you need to look for the tech support phone number in Oz.

Hi

thanks for your feedback, it is not exactly a bug, the system is activated
so MS thinks I do not have to worry but as soon as I run update it will
check and see different hardware to what installed when the acticvation took
ploace and will deny access and i wanted to stop thathappeneing.

Oh well I guess the Tech Support is the option I need to take

I installed a larger SATA drive on my machine the other day then re-imaged
my copy of Vista Ultimate to the new drive (this particular image, by the
way, was from October 2008. This was the first image after I re-installed
the operating system in October.) When I booted into Vista on the new drive
I checked the activation details and it said I had 3 days left to Activate.
I clicked the activation button to activate over the internet and it was
accepted without any problem.

If an 'over the internet' activation is refused try the 'telephone' option
and you should see a free phone telephone number to enable you to activate.

Hi

thanks for the information, my system still says "Activated" I'm hoping it
stays that way this time, I just ran updates again and it worked so I'm
hopeful.

BUT if it does lose activation, is there a list of phone numbers to ring?

cheers

Wazza, if the activation clunks, then you wiil get the activation message
and wizard, which will include the Oz phone number if required.

While it shows as activated, it seems OK.

I had a minor issue last year with a mate's PC - installed XP to new HDD -
on-line activation failed, dunno why (who can delve the labrynthine
convolutions of the twisted non-Euclidean synapses of MS?) - chose phone
activation - rang the 1300 number shown on screen - proceeded without a
hitch (we're in Melbourne).

I don't really hate Windows and Microsoft, but this whole activation
business brings me close to that :)

I ran OSX for almost two years, with Windows XP in a VM, but I went back to
Windows full time, in part because of the large number of items I had to
run in Windows anyway... But I really like that, for instance, I could boot
OSX from a USB drive with an image backup (like when was testing something
and I didn't want to break the real OS drive!) and there was never a
complaint.

Meanwhile, I merely updated the VM's version and Windows required
activation...

And on and on and on...

Selecting the phone option will bring up a free phone (toll free) number for
your particular country. The activation service is automated and you do
need to be in front of your PC when you activate. You will need to input a
list of numbers onto your phone keypad and, in return, the automated service
will give you another set of numbers that you will need to insert into the
dialogue box on your screen. Once you have done that activation should
proceed without any problem.

If a problem does occur then 'do not' put the phone receiver down. Stay on
the line and you will eventually be put through to a 'real' person who will
be able to help you activate your system.

Does Apple use some form of TPM or other unique computer hardware ID
that is then embedded in the OS?
