About 6 weeks ago I bought a copy of XP Pro and installed
it on my laptop. It is running too slow, so I removed it
and installed it on my desktop computer. I received a
message stating that the activation is used on another
computer and I must buy another license. Is this right,
you can only install XP once??

Only once, unless you are both clever and willing to violate the EULA.

Sorry, misunderstood your question. You are only allowed one machine at a
time per copy of XP, but if you speak to MS by phone, you can reactivate on
a different machine each week if you so choose, provided the copy of XP is
NOT OEM, but full retail or upgrade.

If your XP is a OEM version then it is licensed to be installed on one
computer, and can't be moved to another. If it is a retail version it can be
installed as many times as you want, as long as it is installed on only ONE
computer at a time. If you are having the problem with a retail version you
can make a phone activation, from the option shown on the screen.

Thanks, cimex!!

Provided it was a retail boxed copy (and not an 'OEM' one - those are
licensed only for the initial machine) you may transfer it. But you may
only have it installed on one machine at any time, so the automatic
activation will refuse (unless 120 days have gone by), and pass you to
the manual method for checking

What you do is go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and take the option to do so by phone. Phone a toll-free number that
will be given, to explain you have removed it from the old machine and
swap one long number for another to check back as you type it in
