Acquiring Network Address icon

When returning my notebook from a sleep state, the network icon with the
status of acquiring network address appears in my task bar - yet I have a
static IP. The only way to remove it is to open Network Connections and hit
refresh (f5).

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100. Its the wireless connection that presents this
problem. The built in nic, ieee and Cisco vpn connection are all disabled. I
have set a static IP, Subnet, Default Gateway, Two DNS, One WINS, Enabled
NetBIOS over TCP/IP and use an LMHOSTS. I have the firewall enabled. The
connection icon being always visible in the task bar or not makes no
difference.

I can recreate it by either hibernating my pc or putting it to sleep.
Occasionally it does happen from a cold boot. Latest drivers/firmware have
been installed.

Any ideas?

Have you tried the following?

Go into Device Manager (Start -> Run -> devmgmt.msc) and access
the properties for your wireless LAN adapter (right click the
entry in the right hand pane). See if there's a Power Management
tab (or something similar). Look for "Allow the computer to turn
off this device to save power". Keep in mind that keeping that
device running is a drain on your battery.

Hi Nepatsfan,

Thanks for your advice I will try it today. It's likely that the information
you have given below will prove to be a workaround - but it doesn't really
solve the problem.

The question still remains why is windows trying to acquire an address when
it already has a static one set (that is working perfectly).

Best wishes,
jd

I'm no expert on the inner workings of DHCP but I seem to recall
coming across an article that suggested disabling the DHCP client
service on computers using static IP addresses. Go to Start ->
Run. Enter services.msc in the Open box. Right click the DHCP
client entry in the right hand pane and select Properties. Change
the "Startup type" to Disabled and see if that helps. If it
doesn't, you might want to change it back to Automatic.

Good luck.

The same happens here, but actually the network connection works. This
may simply be a bug with the icon status.

My network connection works too... I'm sure it's a bug that's why I asked.
Good to see someone else experiencing it.

Again I'm sure that will work too. It would be DHCP that calls that Icon.
None the less I need DHCP for my other adapters on the few occasions I
enable them. I'm now convinced its buggy.
