ACPI errors in event viewer

V

Vile

I am getting this error message for my win xp.

AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address
(0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This
could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor
for technical assistance.
Errors 4 and 5, it does this mainly when I work with pictures it
restarts the computer. But the error does come up at startup in event
viewer. Is there a good website for the event viewer and how to fix
things that come up in it?

Microsoft website is a joke of course as usual.

I have been trying to update my ep-8kta+ epox mobo but with no luck.
I am happy I have not trashed the board yet with all my mucking
around. I tried the ALT F2 method and the boot disk method with a xp
floppy boot disk.
www.epox.com is where the bios are. Maybe I am making the boot disk
wrong? And how does wins xp boot from the floppy drive? I was also
told by them that the mobo might not support wins xp, but I have been
using the same type of mobo for over a year with no big probs.

I might have to pay a Best Buy guy to update these darn bios for me.
The version I have are 2001 and there are 2002, not a big change but
might be enough to get rid of the event viewer errors? I recently a
few months ago put in the mobo with no probs, but I guess this was a
problem that creeped up on me slowly like a scorpion and bit my on my
butt! Sorry little mad here....

Any help would be great!

Hi,

You're on the right track, you need to update the BIOS. However, keep in
mind that this has absolutely nothing to do with WinXP. You need to follow
the motherboard manufacturer's instructions. Generally, you copy the update
to a bootable floppy, then boot the system with it. Run the file from the
floppy to do the update. Do not under any circumstances interupt the
process. Remove the floppy when finished and restart the system.

Actually, you may be making a mountain outta
a molehill here...this happened to me as well (address
may be a bit different) on an ECS-D6VAA.

NEVER had/noticed ANY ill effects from it.

The restart problem may well be due to something else-
don't trash your system trying to fix the ACPI Event.

Event Viewer/System is an anal whiny little bastard-on every NT
system (back to 3.1) I've ever had, it always bitches about some
non-event that's going on, and that NEVER presents
any repeatable symptoms.

Look to your memory sticks and other hardware
for answers re: the restart problem.

One thing I have learned: the newer your MB, the better
XP and other ACPI aware OS's run. ACPI was for quite
a few years a moving target, and MB mgfr's implemented
it in various strange and non-compliant ways...

Should I make a floppy disk for wins me? I cant seem to get anything
to work, the flash hangs and I am just glad it never ruins the mobo.
I usually just restart the computer and its ok for now.

I tried bios on disk by themselves with the alt f2 method.

I tried the boot disk method, put the award flash and bios on same
same disk by copying and pasting. What is the best boot disk for this
and how do you make one? How do I get it to boot from disk during
startup? In bios settings it is set to boot from floppy first. Or
for wins xp is it the cd then put updated bios on disk in floppy? Is
flash memory writer v7.87 out of date or bugged? Anygood program out
there that is helpful for loading bios?

I also heard that mobo could be updated from wins xp. How do you do
that?

When I get a program for wins xp sp1 dr dos it wants to make 6 disks.
Any reason for that?

Hi,

No idea, but the XP boot floppy set does indeed use 6 disks.

I think my main goal for now is to get to ms dos after boot to install
mobo bios. I tried boot disks at bootdisk.com with no luck. The
system cannot create one either that will do it. Can anybody help?
For wins xp pro that is fully updated from microsoft.com?

One thought I had is to go down to ME and update mobo bios that way.
I did that before with ME but I needed to goto Wins xp for running a
printer which is what my problem came from. Problem with that is I
don't think my computer will survive the downgrade and I will get a
error 4 and 5 during that and might trash the computer since its a
long process. So far I can only basically surf the web with little
problems. Anything more than that and it will restart w/o prompt.
Does not anybody know about acpi problems that can temp manage it? Or
fix it?

You should be able to get a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com and boot
from it. The fact that you have WinXP installed should *not matter*.
When you boot from a floppy the boot process does not look at the hard
drive. If your hard drive is using the NTFS file system, then you
won't be able to see it when you boot to DOS from a floppy. But if all
you're trying to do is to flash the BIOS, that wouldn't matter, would
it?

What happened when you tried to boot from a bootdisk.com bootable
floppy?

When I choose to format a floppy disk I am given the option to Create an
MS-DOS startup disk

That works on my off computer but not my problem computer, none of the
xp boot disks have worked for me yet.

I don't believe that you followed instructions.
When you downloaded the compressed BIOS FILE
you should have extracted it to a temp folder. It had
instructions on what to do.
As old as that board is, XP must run at a crawl.
This is one of the first boards to take a socket A CPU.
The errors that you are getting are from some
kind of memory usage which is a no no when
flashing.
good luck

You do have Floppy set as the first Boot Drive in your BIOS don't you? I
don't know of any other reason that a system wouldn't boot from a standard
boot floppy.

Yes I have extracted the bios about 50 times to disk to try for the
Alt F2 method. Which means I double clicked it and it gave me a
choice to where to put the files. But it hangs every time doing it
that way.

For the boot disk method it won't let me goto safe mode or boot to
dos, it says disk error for every download at bootdisk.com to wins ME.
My next attempt is to downgrade to ME and try that way which worked
for me before. Funny how I am stumping the board and epox.com but it
just won't goto dos.

And before my crash on my first ep-8kta with mobo bios with 2002 on
them I had no problems with wins xp at all, no speed problems either.
That board went out because of wear and tear, could not power up board
after awhile. It was only when I got the newer board ep-8kta with
mobo bios of 2001 is when I got the event id errors 4 and 5. I guess
I have a unique problem. I will fix it somehow.

Thanks that does help a bit, cleared up some other errors anyway. I
still don't understand why this error 4 and 5 came up at all? It was
working fine with the new mobo until just recently. The event id
should in the future if possible give real solutions to the problems
it comes across. Need to be an expert to figure this stuff out and
not everybody has lots of money to spend on such things to bring it to
a "so called" expert. Also need a better way to update mobo bios
instead of flashing at dos.

The one that you make by formatting a floppy in My Computer and taking
the 'msdos startup disk' option. Add your flash program and data file,
reboot setting BIOS boot order to floppy first. Make sure when you run
the flash to start by backing up the existing BIOS, and if there is then
any sign of the flash not fully succeeding, immediately, without
rebooting, run again to restore that
