Event Viewer

I have an Acer Extensa laptop - WIN XP SP3 currently up to date.

The DVD/CD player for some reason will not open/show what is on it or play -
this is not a regular occurrence - might be the discs themselves.
I went into Event Viewer to see if there were any indications and was
shocked to see that the only events in system and application were dated
2008 - the rough time the computer was built.

Despite a search in MS I have yet to find what or where there may be an
application to get event viewer to record actions on the computer - just
like my desktop does.

Application-
The first entry shown is dated 3 July 2022 - a series of error crypt32.
Then the entries are dated 3 July 2008.
I have been into the 'Action'/Properties/View.
The only choices marked are 'all records' with a DOT and 'newest first' has
a TICK.
Clicking on 'filter' I find there is a date selection box where it says
'first event' 3 July 2022 and last event 27 July 2008.

System-
In the View menu, 'filter has the DOT and 'newest first' has a tick.
The filter here shows same entries as for application's filter.

The dates in both are faded.

Security-
This has just the one event showing - 'audit log cleared' 'success' - Event
517

I.E-
No items to show

MS Office Diag-
No items to show

MS Office Sessions-
There are entries dated from 28 June 2008 to 19 June 2010 so it would appear
that usage of Office has been recording events.

Before I go playing around with any settings I would appreciate some
guidance - even a link to somewhere would help.

As nobody appears to have picked up your request to look at this, I can
offer you an inexpert opinion.

I've not looked at the filter settings on the event Viewer before but I
would imagine that if you hit the restore default settings button it will
get rid of your peculiar date reversals and events will start being logged.
Services says the viewer cannot be turned off because security centre and
fire wall depend on it, so if you've been getting updates, it's presumably
been running, and you just have the odd date to correct.

As for the DVDs/CDs showing as empty. I have a similar problem - which I've
never explained - where Explorer doesn't see anything on the discs until
they have been 'looked at' with windows media player. Once WMP has found
the tracks, Explorer can then see them. No idea why, but it might work for
you.

Look in the Event Viewer for clues around the time of the incident

Here is a method to post the specific information about individual
events.

To see the Event Viewer logs, click Start, Settings, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

A shortcut to Event Viewer is to click Start, Run and in the box
enter:

%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s

Click OK to launch the Event Viewer.

The most interesting logs are usually the Application and System.

Some logs such as Security and Internet Explorer may be completely
empty or have only a few items. The default
settings for XP is not to log all that activity unless you need to
troubleshoot some issue in those areas. If
you enable the logging for them the logs fill up quickly and could
negatively effect your system performance with
all the extra (usually unnecessary) activity,

If you have Microsoft Office installed, it has its own logs and they
may be empty or occasional boring activity or very
little activity if there is no problem with your Office applications.
This is normal.

Not every event is a problem, some are informational messages that
things are working okay and some are warnings.

No event should defy reasonable explanation.

Each event is sorted by Date and Time. Errors will have red Xs,
Warnings will have yellow !s.
Information messages have white is. Not every Error or Warning event
means there is a serious issue.
Some are excusable at startup time when Windows is booting. Try to
find just the events at the date
and time around your problem.

If you double click an event, it will open a Properties windows with
more information. On the right are
black up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the open events. The
third button that looks like
two pages on top of each other is used to copy the event details to
your Windows clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred around the time of
your issue, click the third button
under the up and down arrows to copy the details and then you can
paste the details (right click, Paste
or CTRL-V) the detail text back here for analysis.

To get a fresh start on any Event Viewer log, you can choose to clear
the log (backing up the log is offered),
then reproduce your issue, then look at just the events around the
time of your issue and troubleshoot the
events that are happening when you have your issue.

Any event you cannot interpret or understand, post them back here (now
you know how) for commentary.

Thank you for your input.
I will look into these 'filter settings'.
Nothing plays on WMP or Power DVD.
I think the supplier has a duff lot - sent back No3 on Monday - it has been
tested and found to have a fault as well. Hope to get one that works
tomorrow/later today.

Thanks Spamlet - that was the clue to the problem.
Deleted all events in the Event Folders I wanted - ignored the others.
Refreshed, then went into each of their respective properties and reset them
to default.
I restarted a couple of times and now all the important actions/events in
'Applic', 'System' and 'Security' are showing.
When Acer had finished building this machine they had failed to engage
default settings and had left most events to record in the year 2022 - I
would never have been able to be around to see the results

Somebody may have set the date like that deliberately so as not to log
system events but to still be able to use Security Centre and Firewall.
Can't see why they'd want to though. An odd mistake, but good to hear you
sorted it.

I am expecting my fourth tomorrow - yes 4th - not sure if same make or
model - they were going to test all they had in stock - if all faulty then I
get a different make.

For me there has been so much confusion with matters computer - I have just
seen in my original post that I copy/paste the wrong computer details - what
an idiot.
The computer in question is my desktop - the item of equipment is a LiteOn
ATAPI iHAP322 - 32 - 9.

I fitted No4 and got the same problem as before - the box had been opened so
looks as if it might have been tested first by the supplier.
I was hoping to slave it onto another computer, but have been unable to do
so.
What I did do today, was get another DVD[not bought-borrowed] plus a new
cable, which I fitted to the desktop - tried both cables but got the same
result - all types of disc show as empty.[left click my comp - left click
DVD-RAM - left click to open CD drive D:] - it shows as having free space -
0 bytes - total size 0 bytes.
The 'write files to CD' cannot be done - must copy files to CD first.
Did the same with both cables and my new DVD - same result.
What I did find was that when I put my XP disc IN, I was able to boot from
it get into recovery console - most strange, as nothing will play on Win Med
Player.

I am not too sure what the above is telling me - but I think my only other
option left, is to go for a clean install if XP[which is something I was
intending to do in a couple of months until this DVD problem started]. I
have run out of any other possible cures.

I have been talking in all my posts, about a DVD/CD Player[ROM] - RAM is a
typo in the last post.
Thanks for the link - though I have already read most of the links that have
anything remotely connected with the problem - there are a couple that look
new.
I forgot to mention that I ran two driver scans earlier in the week - one
showed no update[listed as digital sig with Microsoft] and the other one on
offer I checked with LiteOn - waiting their reply - but LiteOn say the
current driver is as the one being used.
The one I have always used and worked OK.
