ACPI BIOS error

P

Paul

My computer has been shutting itself off, usually when I
try to use something that deals with graphics such as a
game or the internet. It doesn't happen every time, just
intermintently but is getting more frequent. I thought it
was a software problem caused by some sort of conflict so
I installed a new O/S (Windows XP), but I still have the
same problem. Fortunately, because of XP, I now have the
ability to view the Error Log and this is the message
that I keep getting:

Event Type: Error

Along with that message is this one:

Now that I have isolated the error, I have no idea how to
correct it. I have gone to the links and read up on it
but haven't really found any hard advice as to how I go
about fixing the problem. Any information or suggestions?

Hi, you need to make sure that the manufacturer of your motherboard has a
updated bios that is compatible with XP, however that will solve the error
message but it is unlikely to solve the shutting off problem. As it seems to
happen with the graphics that gives us more of a clue; 1) is your
motherboard a via based one using a AMD CPU, the download the 4 in 1's from
here http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300 2) What kind of power supply have
you got in the PC, you might need one that has more wattage. 3)What kind of
graphics card have you got and have you got the latest drivers? I would
start with steps 1 & 3 first, as they are the cheapest....
