Acer TravelMate touchpad problem with Windows Updates

I have an Acer TravelMate 653LCi with Windows XP Pro. I previously
identified two Windows Updates (I have forgotten which) that, when I
installed them, made both my internal touchpad and my keyboard completely
unresponsive - I could still use my external USB-based mouse, but without
the possibility to enter commands it was more or less useless. I cannot find
anything to help me on Acers support site and a google search just found
others with similar problems without any solutions. I was wondering if
anyone has experienced the same and if someone knows the solution?? (It is
quite annoying because it prevents me from upgrading to Service Pack two
since these updates are "critical updates"...)

The Touchpad-driver is from Synaptics if that is any help...

1. I have an Acer notebook (different model). On my computer Fn-F7
enables or disables the touchpad. Have you tried that (or the
appropriate combination for your notebook)?

2. In Control Panel, click Mouse and look for the Synaptics tab --
it's got a ragged red oval on my machine but could be different on
yours. Make sure it says "Yes" under Enabled.

3/ Next time you book, hit F2 (or the key for your notebook) to
configure the BIOS and make sure the touchpad is enabled. (I won't
swear there's a BIOS setting, but it's worth checking.)
