Acer 50x cdrom player

I use WINXP Home with sp2 and all updates. My Acer 50x cdrom player is not
working. When I insert any cd the drives spins up but then my system boots.
According to WINXP Device Manager the drive is working properly. Any help
would be appreciated.

Try to clean the lens with any quality CD-lens cleaner. If that doesn't
help get it checked by a technician.

Current prices are of CDROM drives are so low that it is cheaper to
purchase a new drive than it is to pay a technician to test one.

My distributor no longer even lists CDROM drives on their price lists
because CDRW drives have also gotten very cheap.

Tiger Direct lists CDROM drives starting at $US16.99 and CDRWs
starting at $US24.99. Other retailers should have comparable prices.

Before you go out and buy another device, you might want to check that you
have the latest/correct driver installed. I have an Acer drive as well, and
until I finally found/installed the right/latest driver, I was having all
kinds of problems with the drive in XP. One good site for downloading Acer
drivers is http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/.

Most CD, and DVD, drives all use the standard MS device drivers, so it
should be built into XP already. You can also look for updated drive
firmware and see if this would correct your problem.

As previous said, CDRom only drives are "disappearing". Your best bet is to
replace it with a DVD drive (Rom or _/+RW).
