Accessing Contacts From AB Hangs OL2000

M

Maki Isayama

Running Outlook 2000 on Win XP Pro in Corporate mode,
accessing mailbox on Exchange server(also 2000). You can
access the contacts folder just fine. I also created a
new contacts folder in the user's personal folder and
added it as an Outlook address book.

If you go into the address book and choose either of the
Outlook Address books from the list, Outlook hangs, then
shuts down. I've tried removing the Contacts folders from
the Outlook Address Book service and adding it back with
no change. Also ran "detect and repair" with no change.
All latest patches for both XP and Office have been
applied. Any ideas on how to correct this problem?

Many people have reported similar problems after applying SP3, but we've not
been able to get any consistent repros.
Have you tried creating a new profile?

Not really. As far as I know, we applied SP3 several
weeks ago and the person has been working fine. She did
mention however that it started happening right after she
added several new entries into the default contacts
folder in her Exchange mailbox. Is there a known issue
with SP3 and more importantly, is there a known *fix*?

Let me guess. Did this just start after you applied SP3?

No, none. The problem is the same as all the others I've seen. The steps to
repro the behavior are not known and Microsoft cannot reproduce the problem.

Here is what I have tried so far:

Created a new profile. No go.

Removed the Contacts folder as an Outlook address book,
shut down Outlook, checked th make sure it was gone
(sometimes it wasn't and I had to remove it again), then
added it back, no go.

Tried creating a new contacts folder in the Personal
folders then adding it as an Outlook Address book, same
thing happens.

Tried emptying the Contacts folder in question, so that
it was completely empty. It gives you an error:

"an internal support function returned an error"

It does not hang and shut down Outlook at this point, but
its not displaying the folder properly either.

I added a single test contact to that folder, but when I
try accessing it from inside the address book, I still
get the "internal support..." error and the single entry
is not displayed.

I was able to add a contacts folder in a Public Folder as
an Outlook Address book and I was able to access it.

Any ideas?
