access the subdirecties in Save as

My Word and Excel programs have developed a problem in the Save As function
in that the programs can not access the subdirectories of the popup menu
resulting in a Not Responding Message and closing down the program.

Have you tried to compress your disk?

I spoke with a computer friend and he suggested checking the current updates
and deleting Security Update for Windows XP KB908531.
After I did that it works fine.
