I am not a network expert by any means, although I was a
database developer 4 years ago, but this is what I am
doing.

I have a WIN 2K Pro Desktop with a wireless router
connected. I have a Compaq Notebook with Win XP. I can
connect via the router from the notebook to the internet
no problems.

I can't connect to the desktop as I get the following
error...

\\Billsnewcompute is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.

The network path was not found.

Click OK.

I can see Billsnewcompute when I open View workgroup
computers on the XP notebook but the error pops up when I
try to click on the computer.

I have set the shares on the folders on the desktop that
I want to have access to. I believe I did this right.

It is almost as if I am locked out of the computer
altogether. What did I miss? Is this a simple problem?

Any help is appreciated.

thanks in advance...

Bill

Windows network errors tend to be a bit generic and sometimes are misleading,
you may have more of a connectivity problem than a permissions problem. I would
start with the following.

-- Create a user account on the W2K computer that has the same logon/password
that you use to logon the XP computer or temporarily enable the guest account on
the W2K computer and have everyone permissions to the share and the folder via
ntfs permissions if used.

-- Try to ping both computers from each other by name and IP address as shown
via Ipconfig /all to establish basic network connectivity.

-- Make sure any personal firewall or tcp/ip filtering is disabled on network
adapter. Note that tcp/ip filtering will allow a successful ping but block file
and print sharing.

-- Try to connect using \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename using actual lan IP address
of the W2K computer instead on name.

-- Run nbtstat -n on both computers and they should each have at least one entry
for the computername and the workgroup name with the W2K computer having a 20
record for server also. One computer needs to show as being "master browser".

-- Verify the server service is running on the W2K computer by looking in
services.msc.

That should get you started. -- Steve
