Printer & file sharing problem between XP and Win 2000

I have an Compaq notebook (XP) connected to a Belkin wireless router via
Ethernet cable. I also have a IBM notebook (Win 2000) using a Belkin wireless
card. Internet access works perfectly on the IBM, but I cannot get
printer/file sharing to work. Since the automated XP Network Setup Wizard
can't be run on Win 2000, I set it up manually using the Network ID section
of the system properties. When I try to access the workroup from the IBM, I
get a message that says "[workgroup name] is not acessible. The list of
servers for this workgroup is not currently available." I can open the
workgroup from the Compaq and the IBM's name is listed, but if I click on it
, I get a message that says "\\[computer] is not accessible. You might not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of
this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was
not found"
Has anyone had this problem or know how to resolve it? Please reply if you
have any ideas.

2 things to check:

1. Windows Firewall that comes with XP may be preventing your computer to
share file and print services. The same goes for other 3rd party firewalls.
You have to make special rules to allow microsoft networking through.

2. Make sure that both computers have "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" enabled. It can
be found in properties for the network adapter. Goto TCP/IP properties,
click 'advanced' and goto the WINS tab.

Thank you for pointing out the obvious that I never thoght of! :D Both
computers have McAfee Firewall installed. All I had to do was allow the IP
address of the other computer on each notebook. File and printer sharing
works fine now. Thanks again.

Hi!

Sorry, coming into this on a late train ...

Many thanks for Adam for your "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" enabled hint, a real
100% hit!

But, after a several hours troubleshooting and happy end ... I'm eager to
know, why this option was set disabled ... what would have been the reason
behind it, is it some default setting by Windows, which I really doubt, or,
set purposely by someone, which I think this is ... But why, is there any
reason or real purpose for this?

Thanks again, also for any new replies.

Best regards,

Pete V.

Disabling netBIOS over TCP makes the machine "invisible" in on a NetBT
network.

Hi!

Thanks for your reply Kurt.

Maybe the reason for this in this particular case was, that the machine
wasn't some day in the past even aimed for networking ... all the 2 machines,
this Win2000 and a newer WinXP, on this small office getting a 3rd WinXP one
soon, and I proposed them me doing the networking for the machines, but stuck
for hours due to this bl..dy dwarfy single hiding enable/disable detail ...

Best regards,

Pete V.
