Sharing files and printers between Win 2000 and XP

I am having difficulty getting a fairly old Desktop
running Windows 2000 and a brand new notebook pc running
XP to network together. The new notebook running XP
replaced an old notebook running Win98 SE. The old
notebook could share files without a problem, however the
replacement notebook running XP is unable to connect. Here
is what I have so far:

1.) Box the 2000 and XP boxes connect to a Linksys
EtherFast Cable/DSL Router.

2.) Both are accessing the Internet through the Router
without a problem.

3.) The Linksys Router DHCP Client Table show 2
connections: The Desktop (198.162.1.101) and the new
Notebook (192.168.1.102). 101 shows the correct computer
name for the 2000 Desktop, however the 102 assignment has
no computer name associated with it.

4.) ipconfig run on the XP notebook indicates that in fact
192.168.1.102 is assigned to it.

5.) However ipconfig run from the 2000 Desktop shows the
IP Address to be 192.168.1.100 instead of the expected
192.168.1.101.

6.) I can ping the new XP notebook 192.168.1.102 from the
2000 Desktop, and I am able to ping the 192.168.1.100 from
the XP notebook. However, ping fails to find 192.168.1.101
from the XP Notebook.

7.) Both systems share the same workgroup name.

8.) Listing the Network computers from either system shows
only themselves. Searches using either computer name of ip
address of the other computer also fails.

Questions: How do setup a basic network connection with
file and printer sharing options between a Win 2000 and
Win XP systems through a Linksys Eitherfast Cable/DSL
Router?

When you bypass the router and connect the machines together directly with a
crossover cable, do you still have problems sharing?
