Can not ping W2K from Win XP computer

Hello,

I have 2 computers contected through a linksys ethernet router.
Both can browse the internet.
The win XP desktop computer has a printer connected to it and the Win
2000 laptop can print to it.
The win 2000 laptop can also ping the win XP machine and can access
files on a folder shared on the win XP machine.
But the Win XP machine can not see the win 2000 nor ping it.

Am using the same workgroup on both and same subnet
255.255.255.0
Default gateway is the router 192.168.1.1
DHCP is the same.
Both machine show the same DNS servers
The ip address is dynamic
Win XP has 192.168.1.100
W2K has 192.168.1.101

The laptop does have VPN software, but has been disabled (kill) along
with all firewalls.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Further to this. I can search for the computers and I can see the
laptop. But I can not access it. I get a message that I do not have
permissions to use the network resourses. However, I can see and
access the desktop from the laptop. Just can't go the other way..

Create a name and password on the Win2000 AND XP machine that are
IDENTICAL! Use that to log on each machine and you should be able to
go back and forth at will. If not turn off the XP's firewall.
If you want to get on the 2000 machine without using a login then goto
my computer and do a right click and then a left click on manage, left
click on the plus in fron of local users and groups and then a left
click on users. Then in the right hand box do a right click on guest,
and then left click on properties, remove the check from the bx that
says account is disabled. That will let ANYONE on your network access
the shared folders and files on the Win2000 computer. YES I did say
ANYONE on your network!!!! Be carefull this can be a license to have
files manipulated in a non secure environment.

Thanks, I tried what you suggested, but I still can not get into the
laptop.
Here's another thing, when I try to access computers newar me or the
entire network from the laptop, I get an error message which says,
Mshome is not accessible. The list of servers for this workgroup is
not currently available.

This is strange since I am able to print through the network and can
do a search and Find the individual computers....
Seems Win 2000 does not like to work with my network. I have another
(older machine) using Win ME on the network connected wirelessly and
it is working fine. It's just this Win 2000 that is giving me pain!!

Here's something else on this problem.
Whenever I start up the laptop, I get a VPN-1 SecureClient alert
message which says, 'IP forwarding is active on your machine. Your
machine has been tagged as Insecurely Configured and will block
inbound connectioins until IP forwarding is disabled. Please disable
IP forwarding and re-start SecureClient'

Is it possible that the VPN software is blocking all my connectioins
even after I select "kill" from the VPN menu? I tried to follow some
other advice on how to disable ip forwarding by going into the
registry. But my machine seems to already have it disabled.
Anyone know any way around this or if this could even be the problem??
