Access Denied Files

Hi,
Due to pulling out the battery on my laptop at an inopportune time I
corrupted XP and it would not boot. Backed up some files (removed H/Drive
from laptop, put into desktop and copied files to desktop H/Drive) then
re-installed XP. Now however a different configuration has been set up on the
laptop that no longer allows access to the password protected files I backed
up. When I double click on the folders they tell me access is denied. I know
the password but do not know how to access them as the 'User' no longer
exists. Any suggestions??

Cheers,

Cheers,

If you're running XP Pro, you need to disable Simple File
Sharing and take ownership of the files. If you're running XP
Home, you need to restart the laptop in Safe Mode.

Take a look at these articles for more info:

shared folder in Windows XP

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck

Nepatsfan you are a lifesaver.
I've lost count of the number of computer shops I have been to where the
'technician's' had that blank look on their faces when I described my problem
to them.
Ask the right person and you get the right reply...the hard part is finding
the right person. You de man Nepatsfan; thanks again!!!

You're welcome. Glad to hear you were able to recover your
files.
