"Access Denied" error removing msmsgr from Startup

I cannot remove MS Messenger [msmsgr] from my System startup. I never use it
so it’s just taking space and slowing me down. When I open Startup
[Run/MSconfig/Startup] and uncheck the msmsgr box I get an error message that
says “An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a
service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the
specified changes.†Since I’m the only person on this machine there’s only
one user defined [me] and there is no log on.. I am the designated
Administrator.

How do I get past this “Access Denied, or turn it off?†I use Outlook
[e-mail] and Outlook Express [Newsgroups] and don’t know how they will be
affected but I sure would like to get that little Windows Messenger icon out
of my desktop icon bar. Anybody know what I’m talking about? Thanks, Denzil.

I don't know why you are getting the error message, but there's a better
way to stop the program from starting with Windows. Right-click on the
icon in the Notification Area and choose "Open". Then in the program go
to Options and then I believe the Preferences tab (I'm doing this from
memory, but it will be obvious to you what to choose). Then uncheck the
four choices at the top, which includes "Start with Windows". If there
is an Apply button, click it and then File>Exit (or Close).

The program will no longer start with Windows.
