Hi,

i've been trying to set up a home network for weeks with little success.
After much reading of posts and hours of toil i have reached a point where
both my computers can see each other in network neighbourhood, but the client
will not access the host. However the host can access the client perfectly.

My host is XP Home SP2 and my client is 98SE. I have disabled all firewalls
and anti-virus software (the client has neither) but still no joy. Both
computers happily ping both by IP address and by name. When i try to connect
from client to host i get a window that says: you must supply a password to
make the connection. Resource \\office\ipc$ and a box to put in the password.

I have used every suggestion i can find to get around this - anybody got any
ideas?

thanks in advance.

Enable the firewall and antivirus programs! Your computers aren't
safe without them, and they're not causing the problem.

The problem is on the XP computer, and these steps should solve it.
After each one, try accessing XP from 98SE again. If it still doesn't
work, go on to the next step:

1. Run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP computer (and only on that
computer, even if it tells you otherwise).

2. Enable networked access to the XP computer by typing this command
in the Start | Run box:

net user guest /active:yes

3. Remove the network password from the XP Guest account:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
c. Click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password.
e. Click OK without entering a new password.

Hi Steve,

i have previously tried all of these steps, but i've given them one more go!
Still no joy i'm afraid. I thought it might be a faulty cross over cable but
since i can communicate from Host to client i have ruled that out.

Hi again, having just moved my ethernet card to another slot (thought i've
tried everything else!) and rebooted i now get a different message when i try
to connect. \\office is not accessible. No permission to access resource.
i've had this message before but it it seems to alternate between the two
messages after reboots. GRRRRR
