Unable to see other computer in My Network Places

E

ernie

I have linked my XP Home laptop (client) to my Win 98se desktop (host) via
parallel interlink cable.
I start the directcc.exe on the host and start the connection request on the
client and get connected.
The host computer has some folders shared which I expected to see in My
Network Places but the window does not have the host computer in it.
Are there any further steps, on either machine, I need to do for this to
work?

Ernie,

When you connect a computer running Windows 9x (95, 98, ME) with one running NT
(NT, 2K, XP, Vista), you'll likely have problems getting them to "see" each
other in My Network Places. This is a known issue.

Get past that issue, you could also have a NetBT / personal firewall issue, as
in any LAN.

Thanks for the links Chuck, as you may have seen, I resolved the "problem".
After connecting to a share through the Run box I see a shortcut to it
appears in My Network Places. However if I type the name of a share in the
address bar in My Network Places the share name appears under Entire
Network\MS Windows Network\Workgroup and only persists while I am online. It
seems the client needs to be told about each share rather than detecting
them automatically.

I will get used to it soon.
Regards,
ern.

Some people do get used to it, Ern. Others fix the problem. Thanks for letting
us know, anyway.

Chuck.
Sorry if I have come across as flippant. Am I missing something? I thought I
had solved the problem in that, the way to access the shares, according to
the KB article is through the Run box (rather than My Network Places).
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814988/
I did however notice that, because accessing a share in this way causes a
shortcut to it to appear in My Network Places, accessing thought the Run box
was a first time only thing.
Is this not how it is meant to work?

I really appreciate the work you MVPs do in these groups,
ern.

Thanks, Ern. Some people do indeed use the Run box, and make a static mapping
of single servers. Other people prefer the convenience of the dynamic inventory
of servers in My Network Places. The latter requires proper functionality of
the browser (we're not talking about Internet Explorer here) infrastructure.

The browser uses SMBs, and SMBs are easily blocked by a few dozen possible
problems.

Some people can indeed do without the browser, and use the Run box. I've found
out a couple times though that problems that cause the browser to malfunction
occasionally develop into other symptoms, and eventually you have to fix the
problem itself. It's your computer, though.

And thanks for the feedback.

Chuck, I thought there was no browser issue because the service was disabled
on the XP client and "Automatic" on the Win98 host. I have changed the host
setting to "Enabled" and it now shows up in My Network Places without having
to use shortcuts.

There is one other setting in the Properties sheet of the File and Printer
Sharing, "LM Announce" whose value has not been recommended, what should it
be in this situation?
Many thanks,
ern.

Hi Ern,

Good. You're getting into it now. LM Announce, from what I can see, is a
backwards compatibility setting for Windows 98 computers to run on a LAN Manager
network. LM Networking preceded Windows NT and Windows 98. If you don't have a
problem any more, I'd leave that one alone.

Thank you, I believe I am now sorted.
