About Anti-spyware programs

I think Windows Defender is quite a good program but there are users who say
that Windows Defender failed to detect some spyware. Is it really true that
Windows defender does not detect some spyware? Also, I heard from some users
that AVG anti-spyware is quite good. Is it better than Lavasoft Ad-aware
Plus/Pro? I'm stuck between these two products. Share you opinions or
advises.

In tests, Windows Defender has tended to place near the bottom of the
pack. You can read the tests on the web and decide for yourself which
anti-spyware program you prefer.

Here are some things to know when choosing anti-spyware software:

No program can detect or remove all spyware.

Anti-spyware software is under constant development, so this year's
"winner" could be next year's dog, and vice versa.

Anti-spyware that tests well may have a terrible interface, or lousy
support, or it may be so complicated that you get frustrated.

Spyware is just one of the many threats you face on the internet.

No software, no matter how good it is, will protect your computer from
infection if you don't follow safe computing practices.

The first thing you need to do is to learn about safe and sensible
computing practices. Your own knowledge and discipline are your most
important and effective defenses against malicious software.

As a second line of defense, choose software that tests out well enough
/and/ that you find easy to understand and convenient to use. Most
programs have time-limited free trials, and you should take advantage of
them.

Finally, if you limit yourself to free programs you are missing out on
lots of great software.

Best of luck to you.

Plenty of misinformation in that post, Paul.

1)Firefox is a web browser, not an anti-virus or anti-spyware program so
it cannot possibly "protect your [computer?] from future spyware attacks
and pop ups which are coming in through internet explorer..."

And Internet Explorer 7 went gold in October 2006, not 2007.

2) How did you determine that the OP's computer is infected with Vundo
and Combo?

3) On what basis are you recommending Spybot S & D and Super AntiSpyware
to the OP? And how do those programs protect against viruses?

5) Spyware doesn't confine itself to Temporary Internet Files, and
erasing TIF - which doesn't require "cleanup tools" - won't remove a
spyware infection.

Moreover, so-called cleanup tools often cause more problems than they
solve. All you have to do is read through past newsgroup posts to see
what kind of trouble people have fallen into by using 'cleaner'
software. Finally, cleaner software can't remove an infection.

Often, bringing an infected computer to a professional is the best
solution, if not the only remaining solution before erasing the hard
disk. Today's viruses, spyware and other malicious software can be
extremely difficult to eradicate, and often requires professional expertise.

And here's a sobering thought: In some cases there may be nothing at all
that you can do to remove an infection, no matter what you try. That's
because some infections compromise your computer to the point where you
can no longer rely on what the operating system is telling you. Rootkits
are an example of this kind of infection. In that case, your only way
out is to erase your hard disk and reinstall everything from scratch.
