A word document has saved itself as a D file - how do I open it?

C

I have finished typing a long document in Word - saved as I went along.
Needed to add it to an email for editing and I discover it is not saved as a
C file but a D file which i can't open as it is 'a non-existent drive'. I
need to get this back to a C file so that I can send it firstly for editing
and eventually to the members of a committee. If anyone can help please but
simple steps as I am not an expert with what goes on behind the scenes of
software.
