Opening exisiting Saved Document in Word

D

Debbie

I have saved a document (*.dot) and each time I open the document from
explorer, the file name of the document changes to "Document 1 Compatibility
Mode".

Can someone advise how to keep the existing file name, so that I can edit
the existing document, without having to save again with a different file
name (as it wont allow me to save as the existing file name, as it says its
already open).

Its driving me batty!

Thanks in advance for your help and assistance.

A .dot file is a template, not a document. When you double-click on a
template, you open a new document based on it. Because a .dot file is a Word
97-2003 template, you are creating a Word 97-2003 .doc file rather than a
Word 2007 .docx file, which is why you're in Compatibility Mode. If you
really want this to be a document, then save it as a .doc file with the
existing name (and then delete the template).
