What is a compatibility mode version of my saved word document?

I am using word 2007. I saved a large amount of text in one document (78
pages), when I try to open that file to edit the document two versions
appear, one is regular the other is named "compatibility mode." At first I
worked on the compatibility mode file but all my changes were lost. I tried
to close this second version but the first one would close as well. How can I
fix this problem without having to break my document into parts?

"Compatibility mode" is what 2007 calls working on a 2003 (.doc)
format file.

I don't know why you might have both a .doc and a .docx version of
your file. Did you at some point do a Save As the earlier format?

A compatibilty mode document is one saved in Word 97-2003 DOC format, as
opposed to Word 2007 DOCX format.
Why, when you open one document, two open is difficult to understand.
