A very crucial issue!

Hi!
Almost everyday I hear or read about virus(es); and
naturally all of us are afraid of them. It is important
for the network administrators as well as the other
people like myself. The question is: What is
really 'virus' and how does it work? Where does it come
from in the very beginning? And the most important thing:
HOW SOME PEOPLE CAN CREATE THAT? Is there any special
program which a nasty person can write to make that?
Don't think that I have the virus fobia; I am just
curious. Please help me to know these.
