A very annoying Windows shell problem

Hello,

I've been having this problem for several months now. I tried every
possible way to resolve it to but in vain! Everyone is keeping telling
me: FORMAT the hard drive, which I arrogantly disregard, as I strongly
believe this isn't a solution.

I have WindowsXP Professional on a 3.2 Ghz P4 with 1GB of RAM. The
problem started all of a sudden, meaning that I don't recall having it
after installing some odd program or anything else.

I believe it's a Windows Shell problem. The main problems I'm having
are these:

* Internet Explorer is not working! When I start it, it loads fine, but
it then hangs up with the first attempt to reach a site. Interestingly,
when I click Options/Tools to adjust settings, all tabs work fine
except the Connections tab, which causes the browser to instantly
freezing.

* I cannot log in to the Internet from the first time. I had to connect
twice in order for it to work! If I connected for one time, the
connection keeps sending but not receiving anything. It is just when I
disconnect & reconnect that sending & receiving are OK!

* I can login to MSN Messenger (Some 8.x Live version) only on a fresh
reboot of the PC. If after that I signed off, and then tried to sign in
again, I get a 81000306 error message, regardless of which account I
might try to connect with. This problem exists even when I was using
the old 7.x non-Live versions.

As you can see, I really don't have any specific characteristics of
this problem, but it's really very very annoying. I'm quite an advanced
user. I have a healthy PC that I maintain regulary with latest updates
& patches, virus scanning, etc.

I've tried everything from HijackThis to uninstalling Norton & Sygate
firewall to no avail.

If someone needs some system information, please post back & I'll
provide any necessary or needed info.

Help is very much appreciated. :)

Just perform a system restore
back to a time prior to the problem

Unfortunately I wasn't having any restore points at the time the
problem occurred!

Isn't there a way to re-install Windows shell?

Eziek Osma,
= Have a look in the Event Viewer for any helpful Error Messages (X) and
double click it to get more Info about the App/Program/Hardware causing this
Issue.
Did you try another Virus Scanner rather than your Norton, it may be
corrupted or infested with Viruses?.
Do a scan from here:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
http://www.trendmicro.com
Do also a scan for malwares

= If you have a Full Retail XP CD I recommend a clean Install, but backup
first your Data, Book address, e-mail stored off the E-mail server and so
on...

What your connections is (i.e. DSL, ISDN, ADSL..etc...), try to do through
the Control panel >> Networking and Internet Connections >> Double click
Internet Options and there click on Connections Tab and see what your Default
connections set to! do it off line.

Here some setps to consider:

1= Uninstall/Reinstall IE6 it may corrupt or damaged, to do that from the
control Panel >> Double click Add/Remove Programs and there uninstall IE6.

2= A Faulty Memory Stick try to reseat or reposition the RAMs in their slots.

3= Try to start your system in clean up start mode, Open the Run Command and
type:
msconfig click [OK] and on the Sys config Properties click on StartUp Tab
and uncheck the unnessacery Apps/progs there and Restart you computer and see
if the Error will Reoccur.

Q= What your Video card Make and module, did you get the latest driver for it.

Q= Do you have other *Toolbar* installed, try to uninstall them and see if
the issue will resolve.

Q= You mentioned HijackThis, did you sent the Report to the Hijack forum for
analysis?.

HTH.
Please apply each step (1, 2, 3) one at a time and see if that will help.
