A Treasure Trove

Here is a link that I came across for an amazing collection of downloads:
http://esca.atomki.hu/paradise/sac/utiltext.html, unfortunately you'll find
some shareware programs mixed in with the freeware...no way to tell off
hand which is which from the listing, but I have found some real freeware
gems there, my favorite being: envelwiz.zip ...Envelope Wizard - Util for
envelopes printing.

I have seen so many posters here lamenting the poor envelope printing
capabilities of the free office suites; Envelope Wizard is simple and easy
to use. I use it with CrypEdit or AEdit to handle most of my
correspondence. Maybe there is something on this list that others might
find useful as well.

Also unfortunately, it's impossible to tell from the list which are
freeware and which are shareware. Generally though such downloads are:

1. a zip file containing a readme that clarifies the program's status.
2. a self extracting executable which can be opened and examined in an
archiving program
3. an installation executable which doesn't clarify the program's
status until during installation or worse yet, after the program is
installed.

Due to the way installing some programs can leave debris all over
one's system that is difficult to locate and remove unless an
installation monitoring program is used, the latter category should be
avoided.

When I come across a program that doesn't say whether it is shareware
or freeware. I'll generally just type the name of the program in
Google, and try to find the author's homepage. Most of the time it's
fairly easy to find. For those rare occasions that I can't find
anything. I'll then do a Google Newsgroup search to see if the program
was mentioned somewhere. Another option if you have *Broadband*
and it's a zip, rar, or ace file, is to simply choose to open the file
instead of saving it. Then look for the text file that describes the
program. Using these 3 methods, you can usually find out whether the
program is Freeware, or Shareware.

by backing up thru all this you find
http://esca.atomki.hu/paradise/sac/index.html which seems to be the
largest collection I've seen since FilePile..... they make no claims
and do not sort by freeware.....but if you've lost a favorite old
app, this might be a place to look...

The above (sac) site is some sort of mirror for the Slovak Antivirus
Center archive.
In the past, quite a few times a search in this group for (sometimes
elusive) freeware resulted in a download from the SAC archive.

I believe their main ftp servers are :
ftp://ftp.elf.stuba.sk/pub/pc and ftp://ftp.sac.sk/pub/pc
There are also several HTML shells, e.g. at http://www.sac.sk
which lets you use a search box.
