Well now I do. Like an idiot I downloaded this program:

3D Waterfall Screensaver 2/08/2005 Screen Savers
http://www.freewarepub.org/freewareshowone.asp?sterm=3D Waterfall Screensaver

The readme file for the SS says that it's shareware. Period. I suppose
it is, since it only runs for about 21 seconds and then turns off. I
consider that to be crippleware, but of course that's a version of
sharewaree anyway.

They makers of the screensaver want you to buy the full version for
about $15. Not only that, but after installing that POS, my System
Restore quit working and updates to AVG became very problematic. I dont'
know these problems are related to having installed the SS, but if The
Freeware Publishing Site doesn't have the time to try out the programs
that they're listing to see if they're freeware or not, my
recommendation is to steer clear of that site entirely.

I certainly know that I will do so in the future.

They should have named the website the "Shareware Publishing Site"

be a mixed bag of Freeware and $ware, they should stop posting their
off-topic offerings in this group and post their offerings in a group

I certainly know that I will do so in the future.

As it turns out, I'd used Total Uninstall to remove the SS. That may
have messed with System Restore. To correct the problem, I temporarily
disabled System Restore and then deleted all the files in its
subfolders. After that I rebooted and then reenabled System Restore and
then rebooted again. I did a System Restore successfully off of the new
checkpoint, so I'll assume that SR is working again. I know it's
supposed to delete all of them automatically when you disable System
Restore and then reboot, but that's never been the case on my system for
some reason.

As for AVG updating, turns out they were making a new update available
at the time and their server was busy doling it out to those who have
automatic update enabled in AVG. Eventually, I was able to do the update
successfully. Ran AVG and came up with nothing, but I know that's not
written in stone. I also did a simple search for files modified or
created in the last day and found nothing suspicious. Next I ran
a2hijackfree and went over the entries in that log. Nothing suspicious
there.

Pretty much sure I got away with it. However, one of the easiest ways to
get a trojan, virus or some other kind of malware is to install a
screensaver from a non-reliable source. I knew this and still did it
anyway. My bad. I most likely got away with it this time, but frankly,
if a screensaver requires installation from an executable file that's a
bad sign. Not absolutely a bad sign, but a bad sign nonetheless.

IMO.

Hi John,

You are aware of the fact that so called "mail forms" very often open a
backdoor into the webserver's root processes and therefore are a primary
target of hackers/spammers? Even though I don't use scripts like that,
you don't want to know how many attempts I had on my domain!

Now for what purpose do you have those "throwaway accounts" other then to
use in these circumstances???

BTW; IMO "freeware" is a highly abused word nowadays: Ever searched with
"our friend" Google (or any other search engine) for freeware... And,
what was the polution rate? Unfiltered, I think that about 45% of the
offered links is garbage (especially those dynamically generated pages
polute the searchresults increasingly).

Dick

No, I wasn't aware of this. Guess that's why they don't have it set
up that way then.

True, but here's the deal... Nonags reviews all software submitted to
their site. If they don't like something, it gets tossed. If it goes bad
at a later date, then the viewer can provide feedback via a link that
works in any browser. Their reply is always something like "Thanks,
we'll look into this soon" and they do. What I'm saying is that Nonags
takes the time to review any software that's submitted AND they use user
feedback. Regardless of the method used for the submission of that user
feedback, the big difference is that they review their software. The
Freeware Publishing Site doesn't seem to do this. Thus, the onus of
finding out whether a program is malware or non-freeware is on the end
user. NO THANKS!

If I were a webmaster of such a site, I would stay away as far from those

that is as far as can be!!!

Let there be no mistake (you already could have guessed from the previous
paragraph), I don't differ with you guys in opinion about TFPS, and agree
that there are way better reviewing sites than one who lists shareware (and
the Gods know what other ware!) [For the nosy: How I know? When I see
their/his listing here, I check a few out using my search engine!], from
the perspective of a webmaster: The best response is the response through
direct eMail: 1st it is a genuine person, not some joker; 2nd in case he
had something different on his desk while testing he could ask the
complaining end user for comments (like version, where it was downloaded,
etc. etc.)

As for finding out whether a program is malware... aren't we always the
ones who discover (hopefully in time...). A week or so back, I visited
www.kelpiesoftware.com, who have a strict "No Adware, No Spyware" guarantee
on every page. So I downloaded a program from there an while installing it,
I saw the author's notice that I would have to agree to Save! being
installed, and ads being delivered... That installation was canceled of
course; and I wrote the kelpiesoftware webmaster, a screenshot as
attachment. The webmaster replied in a very kind way, and the program was
gone from the site within the next hour...

Now, imagine you are SoS'es webmaster... he has thousands of programs
listed... would you have the time to test them all whether they have gone
"bad" (and that over and over again)? Of course not! That is where the "end
user" comes into play IMO!
Heh. Remember who you're talking to. 80)>

<LOL> I know, John... I know!
