A Network Cable is Unplugged

Apologies for posting a question which has been addressed numerous times here
already, but following the instructons in other posts has not solved my
problem.

I am getting the Local Area Connection 2 - A network cable is unplugged
message repeatedly.

I am not on a network, it is a stand-alone computer.

I have unclicked the box "notify me when connectivity has been lost" in
properties, to no avail.

I've re-installed the latest drivers for the modem.

I've checked all the cable connections.

I tried disabling all the network connection in properties, however that
disabled my internet connection, also.

I have tried the "repair" utility but it says it cannot repair the
connection because it is unable to refresh my IP address

I am running Windows XP
It is a BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem
I connect to the internet using AOL 9.0 (it is a Broadband by AOL package
I've installed)
The setup is a USB cable from PC to modem - line cable from modem to DSL
filter - DSL filter into phone jack.

The AOL tech support said it is possibly caused by not having the computer
hooked up to the "main" phone socket (where telephone line enters the house),
however I've been up and running happily for a number of months without this
problem.

Also, in Network Connections I have under "LAN or High Speed Internet
Connections" four connections.
1394 Connection
1394 Connection 2
Local Area Connection
Local Area Connection 2 (this is the one which lists my DSL modem type)

I've tried disabling all but the Local Area Connection 2, which has not
helped. Is it possible I have too many connections listed?

This is driving me mad!

Go into Device Manager and delete the "Local Area Connection
2" Device. Then reboot. Use Windows' Help, if necessary, to
find Device Manager.

You probably also want to delete "1394 Connection 2" which
probably exists for the same 'failed' reason that created
"Local Area Connection 2".

After rebooting, go to System (Event) log to verify that was
your only problem. Unlike Windows 98, XP will instead only
record the problem and then keep working. You have to go to
Event Log to learn about problems that once caused immediate
Windows 98/ME crashes.

If deleting those second Local Area and 1394 Connections
causes problems, then return to Device Manager, delete all
connections, and reboot. The system should then find and
reload new connections for those devices ... that work.

Repeatedly... as in constantly? Never goes away? Or, does it come on
intermittently? If you unplug the USB cable does the message come up?

If you disable all connections except for Local Area Connection 2 and
still get the messages then the most likely cause is a problem with
Local Area Connection 2. Could be the DSL modem.. USB port? USB Cable?

Do you have a standard Ethernet connection on the back of your computer?
I suspect that you do (go to Device Manager and look for an Ethernet
Controller under the 'Network Adapters' category). I'd get rid of the
USB connection and use a standard CAT-5 patch cable to hook up to the
Internet - BTW, this cable usually comes free along with most cable/DSL
modems.

AOL + Tech Support = Oxymoron.... For technical support you should call
your DSL service provider.... and avoid AOL support at all costs.
They've done vastly more harm than good over the years for most of my
customers - FYI most of my customers dropped AOL as soon as they went to
broadband...... You don't need AOL.... Truly, YOU DON'T NEED AOL!

No. Every piece of hardware that could possibly be used as a network
connection is listed here - I have six listed with no problems. What's
probable is that Local Area Connection 2 (USB) is having trouble or
maybe your DSL modem is flakey.
This is driving me mad!

Hi Linda!
I am also a AOL DSL customer( a happy one) and thought Id let you know, just
in case you have trouble getting solutions that I have always gotten all my
connections problems solved at a wonderful site called Broadbandreports.com.
They have a special section for AOL DSL users. There are many very friendly
people there as well as here and you should get your questioned answered if
it's not addressed here!

I'm connection with a wireless pc card & have disabled the build in factory
NIC to not see that message. Disabled the bult in NIC in Device Manager =
No unplugged cable message.
