A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup.

I'm using XP Home (with SP1) and all of a sudden I started getting the
above message yesterday. I followed the file in the KB but it didn't
help, I also followed a couple of other procedures I found on the net,
but they too didn't work. What the heck is going on here? Any advise?

I followed Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 319949 Method 3, to
Reinstall the Search Companion Files from the Srchasst.inf file. I also
ran SFC /SCANNOW from the start/run box and it compared all my windows
protected files against the files on my XP Home CD.

Neither of these worked. Is there an easy way to correct this problem
without installing XP again? That would suck big time.

Thanks!!!

Norm

Hi,

Have you tried turning the Search Companion off, running a search, then
turning it back on again?

Ummm, how do I turn it off? I've tried to modify it using info in MS KB
files but they don't help. Thanks!

Hi,

Open Search, click on "change preferences".

Hi,

Open Search, click on "change preferences".

I think I'm missing something here.

When I open Search, all I see is:

For Files or Folders…
On the Internet…
Using Microsoft Outlook…
For People

I'm having my problem with the search for Files or
Folders option, as soon as I select it I get the
error pop up window stating "A file that is required
to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need
to run setup."

Which I have done, but to no avail. <sigh>

Thanks,

Norm

Hi Norm,

Scroll down a bit on the left where you see:
For Files or Folders.
On the Internet.
Using Microsoft Outlook.
For People

The option should be in the next section under "you may also want to..."
