A:\ Drive problem

I recently finished building a new PC and reinstalling Windows XP. The
installation went without any problems except now the A:\ drive is not
reading floppy disks. When I open My Computer the A:\ drive letter appears,
and when I right click the drive and click Properties, it states "This
device is working properly". Power is going to the floppy drive and the
cable is connected properly between the drive and the MOBO.

If I insert a floppy (either containing data or blank) and then try to open
it, I always get the following message: "The disk in Drive A is not
formatted. Do you want to format it now?" Obviously I don't since the disk
contains data. Even if I choose the option to format, I get a message
saying formatting cannot be completed.

Further, if I insert a floppy containing data and right click the A:\ drive
and click Properties, it indicates Used Space=0 bytes and Free Space=0
bytes.

Any ideas how I can get the A drive functioning properly?
