A couple of questions on Previews, Animation Effects & Versions

I'm working on a presentation in Powerpoint 2000 and I have a couple
of questions, the answers to which are going to determine how I
progress.

1. So far, my presentation has 50 slides in it, and it is growing. My
question in relation to previewing is, can I do a slide-show preview,
on one slide only? If I'm working on say, slide 40, I don't want to
have to go through the previous 39, just so that I can see what slide
40 looks like. In many cases, it may be a change to an animation
effect or the timing of it, and the preview button within the "Custom
Animation" box, doesn't show the timing of these effects.

2. One of my slides has several items on it. The idea is for 5 items
to remain on the slide, and for another item to appear. After a set
time, this item should then disappear and be replaced with another
item. The flow then continues, with this item disappearing and
another being shown. Again, after a defined time period, this third
item should disappear and a fourth be displayed. Is this kind of
animation possible, and if so, how? I can't find the necessary
options to allow it.

3. In terms of version, I am at work using Powerpoint 2000. However,
at home, I have Powerpoint 2003. If I e-mailed it home, worked on it
in v2003 and then sent it back to my work account, would I still be
able to open / view it in v2000?

I klnow it's a lot to ask, but I hope someone can help.

1. Click on the little Slide Show Icon in the lower left corner of the
screen. This starts the show from the current slide. There is also a
function key that does this, but I can't remember which one. The View
Show choice in the Slide Show menu starts from the first slide.

2.In the Custom Animation dialogue box, click, on the Order & Timing tab,
choose to animate automatically after x seconds (you decide how many). In
the Effects tab, choose from the After Animation menu (at the bottom),
Hide on Next Mouse Click.

3. At home you want to go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates
to ensure that you have the latest service packs. Then you want to go the
Tools menu, choose Options, click on the Edit tab and check all three
boxes under Disable new features. Then you should be able to work on it
back and forth.

Hi Duncs,
For Question 1, to view the slide show on current slide, click on the Slide
Show icon at the bottom left hand corner of PowerPoint. If you click Slide
Show > View Show, it will start from the 1st slide instead.

For Question 2, this can be easily done using PowerPoint 2002/XP and above,
where you can add entrance and exit effects. For PowerPoint 2000, you
probably need to add one item on each slide, then add appear/dissolve effect
to every item. Then, click Slide Show > Slide Transition. Have the slide
advance automatically after X seconds. (where X is the set time)

For Question 3, you can work on PowerPoint 2000 presentation in 2003. But
PowerPoint 2003 contains new animation effects that 2000 does not support. To
ensure that your presentation will work between 2000 and 2003, disable the
new features in 2003. To do so, open PowerPoint 2003, click Tools > Options.
Select the Edit Tab. Under Disable new features, check all the options.

In 2000 you can get a small preview in custom animation > preview OR you can
go slide show > set up show and show only one slide eg 6 to 6. This is all
much easier in 2003 where the preview is full screen

You can't make things disappear in 2000 (except with vba or trickery eg
going to a near identical slide without the shape to disappear) again this is
simple in 2003 as there are many exit animations

You can play 2003 files in 2000 as long as you don't use animations etc that
2000 doesn't recognise. To be sure in 2003 Tools > Options >Edit - tick all
the "disable new features" boxes

For question #1 (I believe this feature works in PPT 2000), CTRL+Click on
the slideshow icon in the lower left to get a pop-up slide preview.

3. Second question - I'm trying to avoid the need to click the mouse.
If I can explain...

The slide in question has four images of people, and I want to utilise
speech bubbles to simulate a conversation. As a result, when one
character finishes talking, I really want their speech bubble to
dissapear, and the next one to appear. I have managed to get the
timing to fit in to the presentation of it all, but I really need the
speech bubbles to dissapear.

I'm guessing that if I use PP2003 to create it, the anumations will
not work in PP2000?

This being the case, I guess I'll just need to create a few identical
slides and advance automatically.

Multiple slides could work (and might be the easiest, but, as I said in
my earlier message, setting the Effect of After Animation to Hide on Next
Mouse Click, also works for what you are asking.
