98 upgrade to xp

I am upgrading from 98 second ed to xp home.
xp checks comp files and starts update.
When insatalling xp at reboot message says load file
windows root>\system 32\ hal.dll
any ideas why xp wil not install, and how i can find the
missing file?.

If this is an older system, you may need to update your system bios. Older
bios would not support the power managment features in Windows XP. HAL is
the hardware abstraction layer and Windows XP will install a version of HAL
according to the hardware that is detected. Did you run the compatibility
tools on the Windows XP CD before you did the upgrade. Generally this will
identify any issues that you may have with the upgrade.

The XP Upgrade Advisor should have given you a list of incompatible items.
