98 unable to login to 2003 Domain Controller

Hi!

I havea win 98 system which was connected to a 2003 D.C and working fine.

One fine day I found out that the 98 PC is no longer joined to the domain.

When I try to join it back it says the "Domain Controller cannot be found"

Can anybody please let me know what the issue is and how to troubleshoot.

Thank you
Harry

It's a long time but I seem to recall that while you can specify a
domain name for a Win9x machine, you can't actually get them
to joint a WinNT domain. Best to ask in a Win9x newsgroup.

Win98 can't join a domain. You can tell it to use "Microsoft Network
Logon" (or something close, it's been a while), and in the properties
for "Client for Microsoft Networks", you can tell it to logon using an
NT domain. It needs NetBIOS name resolution to locate the DC, so be sure
WINS is running and the 98 box is configured to use the WINS server.
Also, make sure the AD DNS server is specified on the 98 box.

As Kurt said, a W98 client cannot join a domain and never could. Joining
a domain esablishes a secure communication channel between client and
server, and only NT, W2k or later clients can do that. When W98 came out the
Windows server OS in use was NT, which used Netbios special names to find a
DC. The logon using an NT domain controller is pretty much as Kurt
described, as I recall, and W2k/W2k3 will work like that for a W98 client..

Also keep in mind that by default win9x clients can't communicate with a
win2003 server because it lacks the required security features. You must
either install DSClient on the win9x machine or disable secure communications
on the win2003 server.

Two points that need reinforcing:

1) As Mezlo said, install the DSClient. Be sure to download the latest
version if you have an older W2K3 Server CD (There were problems with
the initial DSClient for 2K3). I believe you can also disable SMB
Signing on the server (or at least dummy it down to "request" instead of
"require") to accomplish the same thing. DSClient will give you limited
AD Search function (like search for printers).

2) WINS is REQUIRED for 98 to operate in a 2K3 domain, but not 2000.
