98 clients get "no domain server" error on 1st login attempt.

I have a 2000 server with xp and 98 clients on a TCP/IP network. Whenever a
98 client logs into the network on their first attempt, they receive the
following message; “No domain server was available to validate your password.
You may not be able to gain access to some network resources.†Their
account is not disabled or locked-out, and if they just click OK, with the
password still in the field, it gets them into the network. So, on 1st
attempt, it fails. 2nd attempt logs into the network.

It happens just with the 98 clients. The XP clients log right into the
domain.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Win98 is a Netbios-Based OS, so run a WINS Server. Make sure at least the
DCs and the Win98 Boxes use it,...other machines are optional. You can have
similar trouble with NT4.0.

I am running a WINS server for that reason. However, the 98 clients still
have the to log in twice before getting validated.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

No, not really.
