8min Delay from Splash Screen to Windows Loading

I have XP Home Edition with SP2. When I switch on, the manufacturers splash screen comes up and then I wait approx 8 mins before XP loads - everytime - but it loads. Have disabled or disconnected any attached hardware - makes no difference - why does this happen - how can I fix
