5 Options at Start of Windows

When I turned on my computer, it showed the Windows XP and without even
starting to load, it restarts. Then I get the 5 options:

Safe Mode (and two others with Safe Mode on it)

Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally

I picked on any of them and the computer will restart and go to the five
options again. After a while, I pressed on Last Known Good Configuration and
it worked again.

I checked the Event Viewer and there was no error stated. Why did this happen?

PS: I use a UPS and I didn't use the computer for a whole day. The UPS is
Solaris 650 VA. Could this problem have occurred because the UPS wasn't
charged or used for a whole day?

I suppose its youre Boot.ini which has been changed.
There are 2 methods to edit your boot.ini:

I.) Right click on "my computer", properties, goto the "advanced" panel and
open the properties of the last legend. Start and Recovery....
A window will appear and then you just have to press the edit button.
(I only recommend this method for users with experience.)

II.) Press Windowskey+r and type msconfig.
At this point you will see six panels. Goto the panel which says "Boot.ini".
You will see options which you can add to youre boot file.

This can happen if the system registry gets edited or certain files get
authored.
XP checks the integrity and sometimes see it as an error.
Please excuse the translation. My version is in german so i had to improvise.
Hope it helped you.

Um.... I'm not really a technical kinda person, so I pretty much don't have
any idea what is going here..... How could this thing you stated have been
changed? I don't fiddle with random settings like this.

It dosnt directly have to take place at the user level.
Programs and utilities can effect these files.
e.g your anti-virus prgm gets updated and that can make the system change
the boot.ini for security reasons.
Or installing new drivers can also make this happen. These were only 2
examples, there are of course many other possibilities which could make this
happen.

If the boot.ini gets changed directly, then windows dosnt register that it
has been changed (=>normal start). Prgms dont go through MSCONFIG to change
such settings. They do it directly.
Note: The boot.ini can easily be found with the search assistent if "look in
hidden folders" is activated.

Hey this is what seems to be happening....

My computer only gets these crazy problems when I turn it on from a cold
start. Like after overnight from airconditioned room. Then after I wait, I
think it warms up and then it works again.

But here's another thing, my clock goes back by several minutes when I get
back in windows.

Please help.

Sorry, but ive never experienced problems due to thermoinfluences. here is a
theory. You said youve got a UPS didnt you? Is it possible that you start
youre computer with out it?
Could very well be that the UPS is a bit sensitive against the cold and for
some reason just shuts down the electricity supply. Ergo, the motherboard
dosnt get any power anymore. The OS thinks a fatal systemerror occured and
gives you the option to start in safe mode the next time you start.
Furthermore until the CMOS battery switches in (few min.) is why youre clock
is delayed by a few minutes.
In this case youll have to contact manufactur of the UPS.
Notes: Theres always electricity on youre motherboard. Even if its switched
off.
CMOS = Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor used for the Bios-clock.

Simply start the computer directly. In other words without the UPS unit. See
if the issue keeps on taking place. If that solved the problem then look at
my first message how to change the boot menu so that it dosnt appear...
- hope this helpes, lots of luck, JADM

My computer is connected to the UPS, then the UPS is conencted to the AVR,
which is connected to a regular electric plug. I first turn on the AVR, then
UPS, then CPU. And if the restarting really is caused by the UPS, then why is
it restarting only after I choose any of the five options and after the
Windows XP briefly shows itself?

Well that simply means that youve not just got one problem but a few...
1. If Windows crashes while it loads then its either no power (doubt it) or
missing system ressources (corrupt data etc...).
Resolution: Scan XP for errors, check integrity of files, look at .dll's
etc...
(I recommend a utility to do that for you)
2. It has problems when cold starting. Either again it cant gather system
files or hardware is damaged (rather rare).
Resolution: 1.
3. The clock runs even if the system is off. >>> the missing min. are the
consequence that the bios clock had to switch from power supply to cmos
battery!
Resolution: compare with last message i wrote.

Ive looked at it a few aspects now... may only be windows, could also be god
knows what...
Note: The "event viewer" dosnt get started until windows has finished loading.
Thats why you wont see any entry.
