I doubt that.
I have heard that happens, but never through a reliable source.
AFAIK, it is more of a myth.

Also, assuming that Dell sells computers with Linux, this is not the first
time.
We will have to wait and see if it succeeds with consumers this time.

Solaris is not Linux. Solaris is Unix.

Actually, Solaris is......

Solaris.

Linux is pain to install, I'll gladly pay for Vista at least I can make it
work on my computer.

I get Linux working on my computer quite quickly. It installs faster
than Vista, actually.

Go find a Linux group and leave us alone. If you have nothing to say other
than "well Linux did it better", go away. If you want to be productive and
try to assist people as opposed to just being and ass then your more than
welcome to stay.

That's odd. I didn't realize you were the moderator. I didn't think
this group had one at all......

So you've had zero problems with Windows?

Or he simply doesn't use it much.

I'm not a Linux expert and I don't use Linux exclusively.

All I was saying is that I installed Ubuntu on an old computer and it
works very well. I have it networked through SAMBA to two XP clients
with no problems. We use it for office work, Internet transactions,
email and data backup. Pretty good deal for free. And YES we do use
that machine a lot.

I still like to use XP for digital photo processing, Quickbooks, home
movie editing and for remote (VPN) access to my work network.

I may at some point in time consider virtual sessions or dual booting
with XP.

I refuse, however to purchase Vista. I think its too limited in the
software support and the hardware guys are way behind in their
driver support. For what you get at this point in time, I find Vista
to be way over priced. From a business standpoint, its simply
not cost justifiable.

We were talking about the initial install and setup.
I can't remember the last time a Windows install gave me
a problem. That's not to say that there won't be problems
later on down the line.

I can.

Windows XP and Vista + Promise 378 SATA controller = "no go"

Linux + Promise 378 SATA controller = "no problem".

And I consider the new and "improved" upgrade procedure with Vista a
problem in and of itself.

The silence is deafening. :)

I love it.

I installed Ubuntu in less than two hours, including over 200 updates.
With Windows, it took five days to get it right.

You must not be very good at installing Windows -- Including installing
all of my applications it takes just under four hours.

I've been experimenting with some prerelease drivers that tend to leave
my system unbootable, so I've had the opportunity to try it a few times
recently :(

I would think that if Dell did that, they would lose favor with
Microsoft and that would mean losing all the discounts they get from
MS for installing MS OEM versions.

The number of boxes with Linux will be miniscule compared to those
with Windows. I don't think Microsoft will even notice.
