32bit apps crash when attempting to get online, 64bit programs work fine.

The Short Version: Any 32bit application that tries to access the internet
terminates unexpectedly. 64 bit applications seem to work just fine.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit edition on an Intel C2D E6300 CPU
with a Intel DG965WH motherboard and 4GB of memory.

What works:
Internet Explorer 64bit version, Windows Mail, Weather Gadget on the
sidebar, Windows Update (seems to work, doesn't crash, no errors, but there
are no updates to actually get)

What doesn't work:
Internet Explorer 32bit, Firefox, Outlook 2007, RSS headlines gadget from
the sidebar, EverQuest2, Battlefield 2142, Trillian, Adobe Updater, Logitech
Updater. Word 2007 seems to operate totally normally until I exit the
application and then sometimes it will produce an error. Maybe Word is
trying to download updates or transmit usage statistics. They all produce
the same error dialog box:

"<Name> has stopped working
A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Some samples from the Application log:

Faulting application trillian.exe, version 3.1.0.121, time stamp 0x421c9cc0,

application start time 0x01c78f83cb7a5e1b.

What I have tried:

Reinstalling Firefox a half dozen times including manually removing all
references to it that I could find in the registry after an uninstall and
then rebooting.
Uninstalling and reinstalling all protocols for the network adapter.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter itself.
sfc /scannow (no problems found)
Disableing my anti-virus (NOD32) and firewall software (windows firewall)

It would seem to me that whatever component of Vista that allows 32bit
programs access to network resources is in some way malfunctioning. I'm
hoping there is a way to resolve this without reinstalling Vista. It would
be my third or fourth reinstallation and would be far too reminiscent of the
long gone days of Win95 and 98. Any thoughts or ideas on how to resolve this
would be most appreciated.

you say this is your 3rd or 4th installation. how did you install?
on the same drive as an older OS? you should really wipe the drive
and format it as part of a clean install.

Thank you for the advice. I have not done an "upgrade" install since I
upgraded from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. Before my most recent installation
of Vista, I preformed a low level format of the drive using my SCSI
controller cards format utility.

P.S. Sorry I initially replied via email rather than posting to the
newsgroup. I clicked the wrong button.

I have the same issue.
after changing ISP provider the same programs that you listed stoped
working. i did a research on this issue and i can't find any solution to it
other than reinstalling the OS.
what works for me is IE7 and windows update. Under network everything seems
to be fine. i have tried many ways of connecting the computer to my modem
with no luck at all.
any help will be appreciated.

I wonder if you have some bad RAM.

Problem is with NOD32, try to go in IMON/Setup and on HTTP tab disable HTTP checking.

It's work for me!
Good luck!

Are you using an older version of NOD32? I have it on different x64
Vista Ultimate computers and do not see this issue at all.

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to mention that I had the
same problem and indeed NOD32 was the culprit. However, I had to
disable the whole IMON module, not just the http checking. Once you
disable it (I believe you press the quit button below the setup button),
it will say that it will disable all its network hooks after the reboot.
After reboot, everything should work again. My machine also worked
fine for a month and then suddenly stopped working.

Glad the new version resolved your problem.

Well, removing IMON module already solved the problem for me, but thanks
for pointing out the new version, I had no idea as NOD doesn't appear to
install it automatically. I installed 3.0 this morning and it's a
proper 64-bit application and all modules now work again without messing
up the networking. Thanks.
