The Short Version: Any 32bit application that tries to access the internet
terminates unexpectedly. 64 bit applications seem to work just fine.
I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit edition on an Intel C2D E6300 CPU
with a Intel DG965WH motherboard and 4GB of memory.
What works:
Internet Explorer 64bit version, Windows Mail, Weather Gadget on the
sidebar, Windows Update (seems to work, doesn't crash, no errors, but there
are no updates to actually get)
What doesn't work:
Internet Explorer 32bit, Firefox, Outlook 2007, RSS headlines gadget from
the sidebar, EverQuest2, Battlefield 2142, Trillian, Adobe Updater, Logitech
Updater. Word 2007 seems to operate totally normally until I exit the
application and then sometimes it will produce an error. Maybe Word is
trying to download updates or transmit usage statistics. They all produce
the same error dialog box:
"<Name> has stopped working
A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

What I have tried:
Reinstalling Firefox a half dozen times including manually removing all
references to it that I could find in the registry after an uninstall and
then rebooting.
Uninstalling and reinstalling all protocols for the network adapter.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the network adapter itself.
sfc /scannow (no problems found)
Disableing my anti-virus (NOD32) and firewall software (windows firewall)
It would seem to me that whatever component of Vista that allows 32bit
programs access to network resources is in some way malfunctioning. I'm
hoping there is a way to resolve this without reinstalling Vista. It would
be my third or fourth reinstallation and would be far too reminiscent of the
long gone days of Win95 and 98. Any thoughts or ideas on how to resolve this
would be most appreciated.
