3 questions refarding XPe with EWF filter and networking

Hello

I have built a run-time image of XPe with the EWF RAM REG filter on
partition c: and a not protected logical partition d:. In RAM Reg mode all
changes are gone after the next restart if you do not commit them manually to
the protected partition, but my installation has to run automatically. The
XPe runs fine but there are some question regarding this configuration.

1. Windows Updates
How can XPe be automatically updated when the boot partition c: is protected
by the EWF filter? Is there a way to automatically update a EWF protected
partition? If so, which EWF configuration must be used to do so?

2. Firewall
Does XPe has a firewall function itself? When using a firewall I face the
same problem as with the updates. How can the firewall configuration and
updates be handled with the EWF enabled? Does anybody has a solution? Which
firewall should be used?

3. Virus Scanner
I want a virus scanner to protect the XPe while connected to the internet.
But according to the other questions, how can the configuration and the
updates be handled with EWF enabled? Is there a solution? Which virus scanner
should i use?

Best regards

1. Windows Updates does support XPe directly since XPe is for an embedded
system. The only way to get Windows Updates to an XPe system is to use WSUS
or SMS. To do any updates, you would have to disable EWF so the update
could be performed. The process of disabling EWF and performing an update is
up to you. There is a commad line console application and API set that can
be used to control the state of EWF.

2. Yes. The same firewall in XP Pro is in XP Embedded. The same udpate issue
applys as #1, but I am not sure what the concern is with the Firewall.

3. There are third party solutions that have developed Virrus software
support for XPe.

1. Updates:
Well, it seems clear now that updates only work with EWF filter disabled.
But that makes it impssible to use ewf when you need automatic updates.
Therefore if we need to use ewf we can not update XP. Strange that MS could
not find a solution for this, but i will handle it this way.

2. Firewall:
I understand that when i use the xp integrated firewall und do the
configuration of it before i activate ewf there should be no problem.

3. Virus sw
After thinking it over, why should i need a virus sw. If i use ewf the whole
c: is protected, so no virus can harm my system. The ewf is the virus
protection i think. Is this right?

To your last question, yes. If you use EWF in RAM or RAM-REG overlay, virus
software is not a real big concern. Rebooting the system would loose all
information in RAM.
