Hello all

I can't remember when this started ( have just been ignoring them for the
last few months) but on boot I get three grey error messages:

default.scr has encountered a problem and needs to close
usbwin 32 " " " " " " " "
registry.pif " " " " " " " "

I've ran a virus scan (found 2 low risk email virus's) and spybot found a
number of things.
Still getting these error boxes...can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

Leigh

Hello again

Thanks for the avise.

Carried out the instructions, the 'registry.pif' message has gone but the
other two are still there.
Hijack this can't delete these two entries for some reason. It gives the
message 'files in use. Close down in task manager' but I can't see them there.

Any further help would be appreciated.

You may want to install SpywareGuard against future attacks.

Close down all programs and end as many running processes in the taskbar
as possible then run HijackThis, put a tick beside these and select "fix

This will remove registry entries linking the files but ensure your
anti-spyware program removed them by searching for c:\registry.pif,
default.scr and usbwin32.exe and delete if found.

Are you doing the work in Safe Mode? You need to do malware removal in
Safe Mode to get around the "files in use" error.

Hi

Yes I try'd deleting the entries whilst in safe mode, it still brought up
the 'file in use' box's.

If you can't delete in Safe Mode, then you have two avenues to try:

1. Make a note where the files are. Boot into Safe Mode With Command
Prompt, navigate to where the files are and try deleting from there.

2. If the above doesn't work, then you need to delete them from outside
of the operating system. You can do this with ERD Commander from
Winternals - http://www.winternals.com/index2.asp since Winternals
will let you download this as an emergency download (the full software
is very expensive). Obviously you'll need to do this on a computer with
Internet access and third-party burning software. Or you can build a
Bart's PE - http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ . In either case, you boot
with the bootable cd you created from those utilities and delete the
files from there. Those two tools require a fair amount of skill to use
(and build, in the Bart's case) so if you don't feel up to it, take the
machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA
type of store) and have them do it for you.

Good luck,

Malke
