I can not install any software from my CD drive. Have had this problem for
months. Yesterday I started trying to install Aion video game. The Dos
prompt box popped up and received error message:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
D:\setup.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:9fe3 IP:0214 OP:fe d6 fe fe ba
Choose "Close" to terminate the Application
Preformed virus scan using Active scan 2.0
-found Generic Trojan horse, disinfected
Preformed virus scan using AVG-Anti virus-free (be running on computer, but
never picked up Trojan horse before)
-found generic Trojan horse, healed it
Ran ErrorWiz
fixed errors including NTVDM Error

Thinking that maybe this was just problem with video game I tried installing
other programs on the computer this morning.

Lace program (hearing training software)
Dos-prompt box popped up

Error:
D:\autorun.exe
16 bit MS-DOS Subsyestem
The NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:9fe3 IP:0214 OP:fe d6 fe fe ba
Choose "close" to terminate the application

Paint Shop PRO 9 : Same error as above.

Running Windows XP home edition-service pack 3, ran latest updates

Can you please help me fix this problem?

Thank you!

I went to the site and followed the instructions for Testing the the Ntvdm
subsystem using command.com. The command prompt window opened.

I also used my windows xp disk and did a system repair. To do this I had to
change the the bios to make the computer start up from the CD drive. I have
changed it back to the original settings and tried to install Paint Shop Pro
9. Still get the same error message.
