Help with NTVDM CPU error message

Hi,

I was using the HP Software Update web site to download the latest version
of the HP update software (version 3.0.5). After accepting the download, I
get this error message:

16-bit MS-DOS subsystem

C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPUpdateUtility.exe

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0ff3 IP:015a OP:63
75 72 72 65 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

What should I do?

Regards,

James

Hi James,

Close all running programs. Locate ntvdm.exe in the \Windows\System32 folder
and delete it (it's probably corrupt). Reboot the system. See if the problem
goes away, as the file will be replaced by one from the system cache (System
File Protection at work).

Hi,

The cache replaced it with the same version, as it should. It is possible
that either or both of ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe are corrupt. You may want
to repeat the steps with the wowexec.exe. Otherwise, follow the steps in the
articles posted by Rock.
