2nd Hard disk missing

Anna,

1. I have jumpered it 2 ways. Cable select and Master/Slave AND I triple
checked each one.
2. I tried swapping the connections on the one cable the other way around
and the same happened.
3. I will look into that
4. Didn't appear to have any. I can double check
5. Haven't tried - if there is one I will search it out

I can see both drives with the diskmgmt.msc utility and using Norton and in
the Bios. I can only see one drive (the boot drive) in Windows Explorer.

Just had an awful week. Upgraded my motherboard without reading here
first!

Running Windows XP Pro with two hard disks. Had to re-format one and clean
install Windows Pro. Now it cannot see the 2nd disk (can be seen by the
windows drivers, in the bios and by symantec recovery disk) but won't show
up
by browser window).

Any ideas on how I can get it back up and running?

Cheers

Cut to the chase, here.
In all likelihood, the CHS pattern of the hard drives are slightly different
per the current bios vs. a previous PC's bios. Thus, the mbr, partition
locations don't rhyme, if you will. Due to this, all partitions will have
to be removed, and recreated. Many here in this newsgroup either are in
denial about this, or don't expand on it when that is the source of the
problem, rather, they only talk about the solution not the source of the
problem. At least that's my personal observation...
Some methods of keeping the current hard drive data intact involve saving to
a hard drive media not connected to the onboard ide connector, or to DVD/CD
that is not affected by CHS interpretation.

I've seen instances where windows states it needs to be deleted and
partitioned but only because physically in the registry LBA was not
inserted, after insert it re-appears normal, but in this case it's only
a 40 gig drive.........
But what I think is the idiot install of XP's partitioning portion for
him to put the clean OS on the one drive probably corrupted the
other........It is stoooopid like that sometimes.....Is why I never use
an install CD to partition & physically remove secondary drives....

If his data is no big deal than wipe it and partition....

Watch that!

You're beginning to sound like ME!

I am truly amused at times with the contortions some go
through tweaking this, downloading that, installing this,
uninstalling that, examining this, doing a "dump" of
something else; a week later, they're back in here, "didn't
work! Any OTHER ideas?"

Yea!

IT takes some 90 MINUTES to partition and format and
reinstall your OS!

This is PRECISELY why I PREACH

If you're backed up as of yesterday, sometimes the EASIEST
thing to do is

start over!

Thanks everyone,

Having already lost one disk with everything on it I had hoped to save the
backup one! It lloks like I will have to put it with another computer that
has lots of space and save it by using Norton stuff.

Thanks for all the help - the nightmare continues!!!!

Whoa!

This is the first time I've read anything that has mentioned
DATA you were trying to retrieve!

THAT is a separate issue.

There may be no solution.

However, I suggest a NEW POST, with "I'm trying to retrieve
data" from a hard drive that my system can't find."

See where THAT gets you.

My IMMEDIATE suggestion for THAT issue is:

If you have a few bucks, get to your local computer parts
shop and pick up
1. either an external hard drive enclosure with an on-off
switch that connects with a usb connector.
or
2. a cable/adapter that is an IDE connector on one end and a
usb connector on the other end, and that includes a power
connector with a transformer so you can apply both signal
and power to the hard drive.
this is a cheaper approach than the hard drive enclosure,
but it isn't cooled, so it's not a "permanent" solution.
(because it's not cooled, and hard drives run HOT.)

If one of those two approaches don't work, you're going to
have to find some software for data recovery,

or

you have learned a hard lesson in why you need a good backup
system.

To back up in the future, I HIGHLY recommend a high capacity
hard drive (as big as your boot drive), attached EXTERNALLY
with a usb port. That way, you have a "backup" hard drive
that is true "drag-n-drop."

Let us know how it goes.

Good luck!

I have 16 HD's spread out amongst my 7 computers in my house, my main
machine here sports 7 of em, so ya damn skippy I have backups....I've
seen many instances in various ways of formattin' and various instances
of loss of data.......The DAMN worst is letting windows manage
partitions..........So safe to say I have "backups" and NEVER use
windozes crap to partition........ ;0)
I have an instance where I'll do a clean install of Win2K with SP4
integrated in to the install.......Everytime I do a clean if there is a
120gig or better drive in the machine I lose(not really lose) a
partition......You would think that SP4 covers LBA and it would auto do
it.......Naaaaaaaaah, but I don't panic, I insert the reg entry and bam
it appears on re-boot......I guess it's all in the matter of
knowing........I got too much to lose to not know what I'm
doing.............
Working on a disk now to integrate "ALL" the Service Packs after WinXP
SP2 & SP4 for Win2k......Gettin tired of going to that damn Win update
page after a clean install...........

Thanks for the comments....... ;0)
