-2146762749 - error during installation

Hi,

I recieve the error '-2146762749' while installing new
applications. I traced it down to Automation and
winerror.h (if that would be of any help).

This error was last recieved during installing DirectX09b
from microsoft.com

The prompts that are recieved during the installation
process are as follows:installation begins<<<<
The Microsoft digital signature affirms that software has
been tested with Windows and the software has not been
altered since it was tested.

The software you are about to install does not contain a
Microsoft digital signature. Therefore, there is no
guarantee that this software works correctly with Windows.

Unknown software package

If you want to search for Microsoft digitally signed
software, visit the Windows Update Web site at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to see if one is
available.

(Option buttons) OK, More Info

(On clicking 'More Info', the following message is
displayed:)
Windows did not find a Microsoft signature associated with
the software package you want to install.
After proceeding, an error prompt is displayed:An internal error occured.
Please refer to directx.log in your Windows folder to
determine the problem.
Here is the error segment from the directx.log file:08/07/03 17:19:28: DXWSetup: ***** DXWSETUP *****
08/07/03 17:19:28: DXWSetup: WinMain()
08/07/03 17:19:28: DXWSetup: DXVersion: 4.08.01.0901.07
08/07/03 17:19:28: DXWSetup: SetupVersion: 4.09.00.0902.02
08/07/03 17:19:44: DXWSetup: ERROR = Couldn't run install
on C:\WINNT\Profiles\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1
\Temp\IXP000.TMP\dxwsetup.inf, error = -2146762749
I would like to resolve Prompt 1, as it has been appearing
almost regularly during new installations.

Please help me resolve the DirectX 9b installation error
as well.

Appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Here you go

Rahul,

Appearently you have the Local/Group Policy setting "Unsigned Non-driver installation behavior" set to "Do not allow installation"

I had the same problem installing DirectX 9.0c

How to fix it:

1. Start -> Run

2. type in "mmc" and hit enter (Microsoft Management Console)

3. Select Console -> Add/Remove Snap-in from the main menu

4. Click on the "Add" button and add in the "Group Policy" snap-in

5. When configuring the snap-in, set it to "Local Computer". This will turn it into "Local Computer Policy". Click OK on the Add/Remove snap-in Window.

6. Back in the main mmc window, select "Local Computer Policy" in the left hand pane and Expand it.

7. From there, navigate to the "Unsigned Non-driver installation behavior" setting as below:

Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options

8. "Unsigned Non-driver installation behavior" is at the bottom of the right hand pane. Set it to "Warn but allow installation"

9. Try to install DirectX.

Hope this helps,
RonMan
