DirectX 9 installation error/termination

Trying to install DirectX 9 on a Windows XP system that
currently has DirectX 8 working. Every time I attempt to
install, the process terminates and says that windows has
encountered a problem with the installation and must
exit. No explanation or guidance given. The DirectX.log
shows the following information:

Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong here?

Hi Neal,

Download and install the complete DirectX 9.0b from:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-4c98-baf3-0c67e7f3751f/dx90update_redist.exe

*Antivirus / Firewalls can corrupt the download and installation,
it's highly recommended you disable them during this process. In
fact since you have had problems, reboot and hold down F8 to
startup in Safe Mode, and then install DX using the redist.exe file.
