installing directx

I am running Windows XP Professional with SP2. I had directx 6.0 or so
installed and needed 9.0 so I downloaded it from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

When after I accepted the license agreement, it instantaneously declared
that it was installed. It was not. I found a file saying this:

08/06/05 03:03:59: DXWSetup: ***** DXWSETUP *****
08/06/05 03:03:59: DXWSetup: WinMain()
08/06/05 03:04:00: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll
08/06/05 03:04:00: DXWSetup: Installed file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll
08/06/05 03:04:00: DXWSetup: Unable to get Version on target file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll
08/06/05 03:04:01: DXWSetup: Installed file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll
08/06/05 03:04:01: DXWSetup: Installing on Windows XP SP2
08/06/05 03:04:01: DXWSetup: GetDXVersion(): This is older DirectX which
does not have the version value in the registry.
08/06/05 03:04:01: DXWSetup: DirectX Version: 0.00.00.0000.00
08/06/05 03:04:01: DXWSetup: Setup Version: 4.09.00.0904.00
08/06/05 03:04:05: DXWSetup: Deleted file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\directx\websetup\dsetup.dll.
08/06/05 03:04:05: DXWSetup: Deleted file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\directx\websetup\dsetup32.dll.
08/06/05 03:04:05: DXWSetup: Deleted file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\directx\websetup\inseng.dll.

I tried deleting the old version and then installing this new one, but that
simply left me without any directx version, as the exact same thing happened
when I tried to install 9.0 again. Help please.

XP SP2 includes directx 9.c

Not sure how you determined version 6 on your system. Did you let a game
install a different version of directx? If yes, uninstall that version if
it's listed in Add/Remove Programs.

You could try downloading directx from this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/Directx/

Other suggestions: Be sure you are signed on as an administrator when you
run the setup file.
