2 Windows Messenger icons in my tray?

I have a Windows messenger and MSN Messenger icon in my tray that shows the
programs are running even though they both indicate that I am not signed
into either one.

1. Why do I have both of these? What is the difference?

2. How do I set it up so they do not load when I boot?

there is one that come with XP is called Windows messanger and other one you
download from MS website.
you can uninstall Windows messanger by going to
Control Panel->Add remove programs->Add remove windows components->scroll
down and uncheck windows messanger->next and finish.

and you can go MSN Messanger->Tools->option->General->and Uncheck "Sign in"
value as per your requirement.

Windows Messenger might loading by default, and can also be loaded by an
option in Outlook Express (Tools menu/Options/General tab/Automatically
logon to Windows Messenger). If you don't use Windows Messenger:

As for MSN Messenger: If MSN is your ISP, you can't open the MSN software
without MSN Messenger, it's integrated. A client used MSN, and I removed
MSN Messenger, and an error message came up saying that MSN Messenger was
missing, and immediately downloaded and reinstalled it. I'm not sure if the
same is true for using MSN Explorer without using MSN for an ISP, but it
would seem possible.
