By not having those programs run in the background. Disable the Spybot
TeaTimer (a good idea because it can cause issues) from within Spybot's
advanced settings. Manage the others from either within the programs
themselves or see below. As for the Indexing, normally XP's indexing
service doesn't put an icon on the taskbar. You've got some third-party or
separate search program doing this, possibly the dreadful Windows Search
4.0. If you have the latter, I would uninstall it using Add/Remove
Programs.

It is always better to stop programs from starting with Windows from within
the programs themselves, so look in their Options before changing anything
with msconfig - you're just examining things at this stage. If a program
doesn't offer any way to control startup from its Preferences, then use
msconfig to uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

Right click on the Start button and select Properties, Ta.kbar. Uncheck Lock
the Taskbar. Click on Customise and select Spybot resident. Click on the
Scrollbar and select Always Hide. Repeat the process as required. Recheck
Lock the Taskbar and click on Apply and OK. Restart the computer to confirm
it has achieved what you want.

Hope this helps.

This only hides the icons and does nothing to prevent the programs that
put them there from starting. I know the OP doesn't make it
specifically clear if he just wants to hide these icons, or to not have
the associated programs run at startup.

Just for info - Exif launcher 2 is part of Finepix viewer which uses
148 MB , Faststone viewer uses 4.76 MB ; which does exactly the same
thing .

I answered the question. The notification area can be cluttered with
unwanted icons so that is likely to be what was wanted. If they are not
required to load on boot I would recommend using Autoruns not msconfig as
has been suggested.

Malke got it right with his reply-I don't want these programmes running in
the background
Sorry if I did not make it clear in my original message.
