hi i hope that someone can help me with my problem, i have a computer running
windows xp professional, but i didn't have the windows cd, so i bought a
windows xp professional cd and when i install it i installed in another
partition because i wanted to later copy all my files to the new windows ,
and so i did, and it worked fine, i was able to log into both windows, but
when i was trying to delete the first partition and use it just for storing
info, i ended installing the same windows xp that i had on my second
partition on my first partition, and now i can only enter the first partition
windows and what i want to be able to do is to delete the first windows
partition and return to use my second windows partition. my second partition
, d: is complete, all the files are intact and thats why i dont explain
myself why i cant log on to the second partition windows. please help

Hi lbd

Depending on how you're set up, you might be able to start your second
partition by editing C:\boot.ini
(it's a hidden file)

Under the section:
[operating systems]
you will find all the listed options, such as:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional"
You can make as many options as you like, and select them by pressing F8 at
startup. You'll see one is marked as default.
** Don't REMOVE any until you are happy with the final result **

Now, depending on whether your second partition is on the same disk, or
different disk, is whether you make a copy incrementing the DISK number or
the PARTITION number like this:

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional (on Part 1)"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional (on Part 2)"

or

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional (on disk 1)"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional (on disk 2)"

You see the idea?

Failing that, and if you get totally confused, you might be better off to
copy off all the files you want to keep and just toast the lot, reinstall,
and when prompted, delete all the partitions you don't want to keep and
build from scratch as you like it best.
